Our Social Heroes - Greta Thunberg

Our Social Heroes Series - 10 women who changed the world, and continue to do so.

In a world that can often feel divided, overwhelming, and uncertain, it is important to remember that change is still possible. Throughout history, there have always been people willing to stand up for others, challenge injustice, protect communities, and speak out when it would have been easier to stay silent.

This series is dedicated to ten women whose courage, compassion, and determination have helped shape the world around them.

Some are globally recognised. Others are less widely known. But each of them has created meaningful change through their actions, whether by defending human rights, empowering women, protecting communities, standing for peace, or inspiring others to believe that their voice matters.

At The Green Woman, we believe deeply in the power of people coming together with care, integrity, and purpose. We believe that small actions matter, that courage can ripple outward, and that one person really can make a difference.

Through this series, we hope to do more than simply share biographies.

We hope these stories encourage reflection.
We hope they inspire conversation.
We hope they remind people that leadership can take many forms, and that strength is not always loud.

Most of all, we hope these women inspire others to stand up for what matters, support their communities, empower one another, and believe that positive change is still possible.

We begin with Greta Thunberg, a young woman whose decision to speak out helped ignite a global movement and reminded millions of people that even a single voice can have extraordinary impact.

Greta Thunberg
The courage to speak when it would be easier to stay quiet

There are certain people who change the direction of a conversation simply by refusing to stay silent.

Greta Thunberg is one of those people.

When Greta first began protesting outside the Swedish parliament in 2018, she was just fifteen years old. Sitting alone with a handmade sign, she could not have known that her quiet act of protest would grow into a global movement that would inspire millions of people around the world.

What makes her story so remarkable is not only the scale of the impact she has had, but the simplicity of how it began.

One young person decided that something mattered deeply, and refused to look away.

At a time when many people felt overwhelmed by the climate crisis, Greta gave voice to feelings that others struggled to express. She spoke with honesty, urgency, and clarity, and in doing so she encouraged countless others, especially young people, to believe that their voices mattered too.

The school climate strikes that followed spread across countries and communities, bringing together millions of people calling for stronger action and greater accountability. What started as one student sitting outside parliament became one of the largest youth-led movements in recent history.

Greta has since spoken at major international gatherings, including the United Nations and global climate summits, where she challenged world leaders to take the climate crisis seriously and act with greater responsibility for future generations.

But beyond speeches and headlines, her influence reaches somewhere deeper.

She has helped create a shift in awareness.

For many people, climate change no longer feels like a distant or abstract issue. Through her persistence, it has become something personal and immediate, connected not only to the environment, but also to fairness, justice, responsibility, and the future we are leaving behind for others.

Over time, Greta’s voice has also expanded beyond climate alone. She has spoken out on wider humanitarian and social issues, reminding people that compassion should not stop at borders, politics, or convenience. There is something undeniably powerful about someone willing to speak openly about what they believe is right, even when doing so invites criticism.

That kind of courage is rare.

In many ways, Greta’s story is a reminder that meaningful change does not always begin with power, status, or influence. Sometimes it begins with a person who is willing to be uncomfortable, willing to stand apart from the crowd, and willing to keep going even when others dismiss them.

There is something deeply inspiring about that, particularly for young women.

She reminds us that leadership does not always look polished or traditional. Sometimes leadership looks like honesty. Sometimes it looks like persistence. Sometimes it looks like someone refusing to stay quiet when they believe something important is at stake.

At The Green Woman, we often speak about the importance of small actions and conscious choices. We believe that change is built slowly through everyday decisions, through courage, through community, and through people caring enough to act.

Greta’s journey is a powerful example of what can happen when one person chooses to begin.

Greta, thank you.

Thank you for continuing to speak when it would often be easier to stay silent. Thank you for reminding people, especially younger generations, that their voices carry weight and that change is still possible. And thank you for showing the world that one person, standing firmly in what they believe, really can make a difference.

For that, we are deeply grateful.
